Chi vive con una disabilità visiva ha sempre potuto seguire una partita di calcio alla radio. Gestirne una intera stagione, con rose, calciomercato e tattiche, è un'altra storia. I giochi manageriali nascono per essere guardati: tabelle che cambiano ad ogni click, mappe tattiche, grafici di forma. Davanti a quell'interfaccia, uno screen reader si ferma quasi sempre.
Alessandro Albano, screen reader specialist di Accessiway, ha deciso di risolvere il problema costruendo con un paio di amici il gioco che avrebbe voluto trovare.
Undici mesi fa ha iniziato a sviluppare AI Manager, un progetto extralavorativo nato dalla sua passione per i titoli manageriali di calcio. Per i primi otto mesi ha lavorato da solo: architettura server, scelta della piattaforma, interfaccia, e soprattutto le decisioni su cosa rendere accessibile e come.
Oggi AI Manager conta oltre 22.000 calciatori generati (i nomi sono inventati, perché il gioco non può usare giocatori reali) distribuiti su 800 squadre, disponibile in quattro lingue, con una community di circa 300 utenti attivi sparsi in Europa.
Punti chiave su AI Manager
Accessibile sin dalle fasi embrionali. AI Manager è un football manager progettato fin dal codice server per funzionare con uno screen reader, non un gioco esistente adattato in un secondo momento.
Sviluppato in gran parte da un solo game designer che vive con una disabilità visiva, oggi conta oltre 22.000 giocatori generati, 800 squadre e un’interfaccia disponibile in quattro lingue.
L’intelligenza artificiale accelera lo sviluppo e genera resoconti e notizie di campionato, ma resta uno strumento: il test umano continua a guidare ogni scelta di accessibilità.
Le dinamiche di gioco di AI Manager
AI Manager funziona interamente nel browser, quindi si gioca da desktop e da mobile senza installare nulla in locale.
Prima di iniziare, si sceglie la squadra tra le 800 disponibili e il livello di difficoltà desiderato, che va dalla Serie D alla Serie A: chi vuole una curva di apprendimento più dolce parte dal basso, chi cerca sfida può guidare subito un club di vertice.
I calciatori sono generati dal gioco, perché AI Manager non può utilizzare i nomi di calciatori reali.
Ogni partita dura dai dodici ai quindici minuti e lascia spazio a decisioni di squadra: chi indossa la fascia di capitano, chi tira rigori e punizioni, come gestire le dinamiche di spogliatoio. Una stagione completa richiede invece dalle dieci alle quindici ore, tra allenamenti, big match e sessioni di calciomercato in cui cambia squadra tra il 10 e il 20% della rosa.
La gestione non si ferma al campo. Il bilancio della squadra va tenuto in equilibrio, con il rischio concreto di bancarotta in caso di scelte sbagliate. Ogni calciatore può accettare o rifiutare un'offerta di contratto, e circa 25 tipologie di infortuni diverse incidono sulle scelte di formazione, in un sistema pensato per restituire un'intelligenza di squadra e di singolo giocatore credibile.
Perché il calcio manageriale è rimasto indietro sull'accessibilità
Il genere dei giochi manageriali dovrebbe essere tra i più semplici da rendere accessibile: è fatto soprattutto di testo, numeri e menu. Nella pratica, molti titoli affidano informazioni cruciali a grafici, colori e schermate che uno screen reader non riesce a interpretare. Il risultato è un genere amatissimo che resta, per chi vive con disabilità visive, quasi impraticabile senza l'aiuto di terzi.
Il divario non riguarda solo il calcio manageriale. Secondo una rilevazione riportata dal Game Accessibility Survey, l'85% dei giocatori con disabilità chiede più opzioni di accessibilità, ma solo il 12% dei titoli più venduti rispetta pienamente gli standard WCAG 2.1.
È un divario tra domanda e offerta che si traduce anche in un'opportunità di mercato: il segmento globale dei giochi accessibili online, valutato circa 878 milioni di dollari nel 2025, è stimato crescere fino a 1,5 miliardi entro il 2034, con una crescita media annua del 7,8%.
Per un genere di nicchia come il football manager, un pubblico sottoservito e fedele può fare la differenza tra un progetto che resta invisibile e uno che trova la sua community.
Come Alessandro ha costruito l'accessibilità dentro il gioco
Un'architettura pensata per lo screen reader, non aggiunta dopo
Le prime scelte di Alessandro non hanno riguardato la grafica, ma l'infrastruttura. Piattaforma server, struttura dei dati e navigazione sono stati progettati insieme, in modo che ogni schermata restituisse informazioni leggibili in sequenza logica da uno screen reader, senza bisogno di correzioni successive.
Semplificare il linguaggio senza svuotare il gioco
AI Manager è pensato anche per chi vive con disabilità cognitive. Alessandro ha semplificato il linguaggio delle schermate e alcune dinamiche di gioco, mantenendo però la profondità che rende un manageriale interessante. La difficoltà è modulabile dal giocatore stesso, per accogliere sia chi arriva per la prima volta al genere sia i veterani.
L'intelligenza artificiale come acceleratore, non come pilota automatico
Il vibe coding ha permesso ad Alessandro di accelerare parti dello sviluppo, lavorando tra Visual Studio Code e Codex per generare codice di base, integrato poi da tool di analisi automatizzata e da user test.
Nel gioco, l'AI genera i resoconti giornalistici a fine partita e le notizie settimanali su andamento del campionato, calciomercato e dichiarazioni dei giocatori. Chi vuole può anche collegare una propria chiave API per dialogare direttamente con i calciatori della propria squadra.
Restano scelte editoriali: l'AI velocizza la produzione di contenuti, ma non sostituisce la verifica umana su ogni funzione di accessibilità.
Una community piccola che restituisce dati concreti
Dopo due mesi di beta con tester selezionati, il gioco è andato online. Oggi la community conta circa 300 utenti attivi principalmente in Europa, con giocatori che hanno superato le 90 ore di gioco.
Sono numeri piccoli se confrontati con il mercato gaming generale, ma indicano una fedeltà rara: chi comincia a giocare, difficilmente si stacca.
I prossimi sviluppi
Il progetto continua a crescere. Sono in programma allenamenti settimanali per decidere come far lavorare i giocatori durante la settimana, maggiore profondità nella diretta delle partite e l'introduzione delle squadre giovanili e femminili.
2 cose da imparare da AI manager
AI Manager mostra due cose utili a chiunque lavori su prodotti digitali.
Progettare l'accessibilità nell'architettura costa meno che rincorrerla dopo, anche per un singolo sviluppatore senza un team dedicato.
L'intelligenza artificiale può accelerare lo sviluppo, ma il test da parte di utenti resta la parte che decide se un'interfaccia funziona davvero per chi la usa.
Attualmente AI Manager vive di passione e di un sistema di donazioni.
È una domanda aperta su chi debba sostenere, nel lungo periodo, i progetti indipendenti che rendono accessibile un genere che l'industria del gaming ha lasciato indietro.
