Alt text SEO: come ottimizzare il testo alternativo delle immagini

Una guida pratica per scegliere le keyword giuste nell'alt text, evitare gli errori che penalizzano il ranking e misurare l'impatto sulla ricerca immagini.

Scrivere un buon alt text non basta se l'obiettivo è farlo funzionare anche per la SEO.

Le regole di base sulla brevità e sul niente keyword stuffing restano valide, ma non spiegano come Google usa quel testo per indicizzare un'immagine, né come inserirlo in una strategia che include anche file name, caption e struttura della pagina.

Questo articolo parte da lì:

Come Google usa l'alt text per indicizzare le immagini

Google non vede un'immagine come la vediamo noi. Il crawler analizza il file, ma si affida in larga parte al testo che lo circonda per capire di cosa parla: l'attributo alt, il nome del file, il testo del paragrafo adiacente, i titoli della sezione, e in alcuni casi i dati strutturati della pagina.

L'alt text ha un peso specifico in questo processo perché è il segnale più diretto e meno ambiguo: mentre il testo circostante può parlare di più argomenti nella stessa pagina, l'alt text è associato a quella singola immagine. Per questo Google Immagini lo usa come uno dei riferimenti principali per decidere in quale ricerca visiva far comparire un contenuto.

Il posizionamento dipende anche dalla qualità della pagina che ospita l'immagine, dalla velocità di caricamento e dalla coerenza tra ciò che l'alt text promette e ciò che l'immagine mostra. Un alt text accurato inserito in una pagina povera di contenuto testuale intorno all'immagine genera meno traffico da Google Immagini rispetto allo stesso alt text in una pagina ricca di contesto.

Scegliere le keyword giuste per l'alt text

La domanda utile prima di scrivere è: questa immagine rappresenta quel concetto, o la keyword ci viene infilata a forza? Nel primo caso la keyword ci sta in modo naturale. Nel secondo, l'alt text finisce per sembrare scritto per un algoritmo e perde valore sia per la SEO sia per l'accessibilità.

Un metodo pratico: parti dalla keyword primaria dell'articolo o della pagina, poi controlla quali immagini la illustrano.

Non serve ripeterla identica su ogni immagine della pagina: Google riconosce le varianti semantiche, quindi un'immagine di scarpe da running può avere alt text diversi ("scarpe da running con suola in gomma", "dettaglio della tomaia traspirante") che restano tutti coerenti con il tema "scarpe da running" senza duplicare la stessa frase.

Attenzione alla differenza tra scrivere per un utente che ascolta con uno screen reader e scrivere per un crawler. Un alt text che elenca tre o quattro keyword di fila non aiuta chi ascolta a capire l'immagine, e Google lo tratta come un segnale di spam, non di rilevanza.

La keyword deve comparire dentro una frase che ha senso anche letta ad alta voce.

Questi quattro elementi vengono spesso confusi, ma hanno ruoli diversi nella SEO delle immagini.

Il nome del file va scritto con parole separate da trattini, non da underscore o spazi: "scarpe-running-suola-gomma.jpg" comunica al crawler più informazioni di "IMG_4021.jpg".

La caption, quando presente, rafforza il contesto testuale intorno all'immagine, ma non sostituisce l'alt text perché chi non vede l'immagine non sa che quella caption si riferisce a essa se non è collegata semanticamente nel markup.

Il title attribute ha un ruolo minore per il ranking e va usato solo se aggiunge un'informazione che alt text e caption non coprono già.

Come fare un audit dell'alt text sul tuo sito

Scrivere un buon alt text per una nuova immagine è un compito puntuale. Verificare lo stato dell'alt text su un sito che esiste da anni è un lavoro diverso, e richiede un metodo.

Il primo passo è la scansione dell'intero sito con uno strumento di crawling come Screaming Frog o Sitebulb, che elenca ogni immagine e segnala quelle con alt text assente, vuoto senza motivo, o duplicato su più immagini diverse.

Il secondo passo è distinguere i falsi positivi dai problemi reali: un'immagine puramente decorativa con alt="" vuoto non è un errore, mentre la stessa stringa duplicata su venti immagini di prodotto diverse lo è.

Una volta ottenuto l'elenco, la priorità va data alle immagini con più traffico potenziale: quelle nelle pagine già visitate da ricerca organica, o nelle schede prodotto con i margini più alti.

NOTA: Correggere l'alt text di un'immagine sepolta in una pagina senza traffico ha un impatto quasi nullo sul risultato complessivo.

Caso pratico: alt text per le schede prodotto e-commerce

Le schede prodotto sono il terreno dove l'alt text SEO fa la differenza più misurabile, perché il volume di immagini è alto e la loro qualità cambia direttamente la visibilità su Google Immagini e sugli acquisti da ricerca visiva.

Un alt text generico come "scarpa nera" non distingue il prodotto da migliaia di altri simili in vendita online. Un alt text che include il tipo di prodotto, il materiale e una caratteristica distintiva, come "scarpa da running nera in mesh traspirante con suola a scomparti", dà a Google più elementi per capire quando mostrare quell'immagine a chi cerca proprio quella combinazione di caratteristiche.

Per i siti con migliaia di SKU, scrivere alt text uno per uno non è sostenibile.

La soluzione pratica è costruire un template basato sugli attributi già presenti nel catalogo (categoria, colore, materiale, taglia quando rilevante), così l'alt text si genera in automatico a partire dai dati del prodotto, restando comunque descrittivo e non ripetitivo tra una scheda e l'altra.

Errori che penalizzano il ranking

Il keyword stuffing resta l'errore più diffuso: infilare più varianti della stessa keyword in un'unica immagine ("scarpe running scarpe sportive scarpe da corsa uomo") non aiuta il posizionamento e viene trattato come spam.

Un errore meno discusso è la duplicazione: usare lo stesso alt text identico su immagini diverse della stessa pagina o dello stesso sito. Google fatica a distinguere quale immagine è rilevante per una query se tutte hanno la stessa descrizione, e il segnale si diluisce invece di rafforzarsi.

Un terzo errore riguarda le immagini decorative trattate come informative: aggiungere un alt text a un'icona puramente estetica o a uno sfondo non porta nessun beneficio SEO, perché Google non assegna rilevanza a un'immagine che non ha funzione informativa nella pagina, e nel frattempo appesantisce l'ascolto per chi usa uno screen reader.

Misurare l'impatto: Search Console e ricerca immagini

Il modo più diretto per verificare se il lavoro sull'alt text ha funzionato è Google Search Console, nel rapporto Prestazioni, filtrando per tipo di ricerca "Immagine". Questo rapporto mostra clic, impression e posizione media delle pagine che generano traffico da Google Immagini, e permette di confrontare i dati prima e dopo l'intervento sulle immagini.

Un aumento delle impression senza un aumento dei clic segnala che le immagini vengono mostrate più spesso, ma non convincono chi le vede a cliccare: in quel caso il problema può essere la qualità visiva dell'immagine stessa, o l'intento di ricerca che non richiede la consultazione di un'immagine.

Un aumento sia delle impression che dei clic è il segnale più chiaro che l'alt text sta comunicando meglio il contenuto dell'immagine a chi cerca.

Conviene controllare questi dati non prima di quattro o sei settimane dall'intervento, perché Google ha bisogno di tempo per ricrawlare le immagini modificate e aggiornare l'indice.

Domande frequenti sull'ottimizzazione dell'alt text per la SEO

L'alt text da solo può far posizionare meglio una pagina?

No. L'alt text contribuisce alla comprensione del contenuto da parte di Google, ma il posizionamento dipende dalla qualità complessiva della pagina, dalla velocità di caricamento e dalla rilevanza del testo circostante. È un pezzo della strategia, non l'unico.

Quante keyword posso inserire in un alt text?

Una, al massimo due, e solo se l'immagine le rappresenta davvero. Inserire più varianti della stessa keyword viene trattato come spam e non aiuta il ranking.

Alt text e file name devono contenere la stessa keyword?

Possono essere coerenti tra loro, ma non identici parola per parola. Il file name può usare una versione più sintetica del concetto, mentre l'alt text descrive l'immagine in una frase completa e naturale.

Serve scrivere l'alt text per tutte le immagini di un e-commerce, anche quelle decorative?

No. Le immagini puramente decorative vanno lasciate con alt="" vuoto. Aggiungere un alt text descrittivo a un'icona estetica non porta beneficio SEO e appesantisce l'ascolto per chi usa uno screen reader.

Quanto tempo serve per vedere risultati dopo aver corretto l'alt text?

In genere da quattro a sei settimane, il tempo che Google impiega a ricrawlare le immagini modificate e aggiornare i dati in Search Console.
